Commonwealth Winds was founded in 2004 by Matthew McCutchen to perform a tribute concert in memory of the immortal wind conductor, Frederick Fennell.  Following the success of the inaugural concert, the members of the band voted to continue to perform together.  Commonwealth Winds now prepares three concerts each year, one in the fall, one in the winter, and one in the early summer.

Rehearsal and performance locations are sponsored by area schools and vary with each concert.  The band has performed at Atlee High School, Tucker High School, Mills Godwin High School, and Hanover High School.  Concerts are free and open to the public.  If you wish to be notified about upcoming concerts please click here.

Membership in Commonwealth Winds is by invitation only and includes many Richmond area band directors, music educators, professional musicians, and retired military band members.  The band is conducted by
Dr. Terry Austin who is the Director of Bands at Virginia Commonwealth University.
